Institute of Economics' new paper on the role of government funding in the development of artificial intelligence has been nominated for Knowledge and Innovation Interest Group Best Paper Award of the Annual Conference of the Strategic Management Society

The new paper “The Direction of Technical Change in AI and the Trajectory Effects of Government Funding” by Martina Iori, Arianna Martinelli and Andrea Mina has been nominated for the Knowledge and Innovation Interest Group Best Paper Award of the forthcoming Annual Conference of the Strategic Management Society (London, 17-20 September).
The paper contains one of the largest studies of AI patents filed at the US Patent and Trademark Office to date. It develops new measures of research impact that account for long-term cumulative effects of inventions not captured by standard indicators. It shows that patents funded through government grants, but above all patents filed by federal agencies and state departments, had the strongest influence on the trajectory of AI development, and that this effect was especially strong in the early stages, and weakened over time as private incentives took over.
