The consortium of three higher education institutions Normale and Sant’Anna in Pisa with IUSS Pavia records the highest impact GPA with one hundred per cent of its 5 submissions. The results of the ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes) VQR (to assess the quality of research in higher education institutions) demonstrate the high quality of research conducted at Normale, Sant’Anna and IUSS. The results show that the quality of submitted research outputs has improved significantly, consistent with the MIUR (the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research) ranking list to access the financial resources for the Departments of Excellence.

The public additional funding over the next five years aims to enhance the quality of research and education delivery. The ranking exercise run by the VQR assessed the top quality of the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Humanities at Normale. The department of Economics and Statistics and the department of Industrial and IT Engineering at Sant’Anna have demonstrated the highest level of performance and IUSS Pavia has strengthened its position in the Civil Engineering and Architecture sector.

“These results – said Vincenzo Barone and Pierdomenico Perata, rectors of Normale and Sant’Anna – confirm our institutions’ status as three of the best research universities in Italy. In all 5 departments the results for the 5 projects submitted were 95-100% achieved. These results prove that our consortium is tackling major challenges at home and abroad and may reach critical mass to compete on a global stage. It is important to invest the research resources where they will have the most impact. Additional funding will enable us to foster a high quality environment for our students and to attract outstanding academics and talented researchers”.
