Art and Politics Program

In recent times, the politicization and securitization of cultural heritage has sadly come to the forefront of the news. Historical artefacts, monuments museums and archaeological sites have been violently attacked and destroyed. Against this background, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, described these tragic events as "cultural cleansing" and urged the UN Security Council to include the protection of cultural sites in the lists of UN peacekeeping forces' tasks. Having a significant tradition of cultural heritage protection and promotion, Italy has proposed to create "Cultural Blue Helmets" to defend world cultural heritage from various threats, primarily from terrorist attacks. On June 2016, the European Commission presented a new strategy to put culture at the heart of EU international relations.

Politics and art are more and more tightened. The Program Art and Politics aims at exploring the nexus between art and politics across time (What are the means through which art intervenes in the political arena? And how do politics shape art?). Art is a site of contested representations and visions, embedded in power formations resulting from specific historical moments and geographical locations. The aim of the project is to de-construct that nexus from the perspective of political philosophy and history, IR, security studies, peace and conflict studies. The project promotes various initiatives embracing art and politics.

Research interests:

The aesthetic turns in political theory; art as a protest; creative expressions as a form of resistance; contestation and emancipation; cultural artefacts in non-liberal contexts; art and security studies (from the criminal trafficking of art pieces to the targeting of cultural heritage in times of conflict); global imaginary, arts and philosophy of technology, theory and history of artistic vanguards; places as social, political and cultural artefacts.
