What’s Left of the EU Green Deal? Implications and Pathways for Europe’s Agri-Food Systems
On 16 and 17 September 2026, the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies hosts the international conference “What’s Left of the EU Green Deal? Implications and Pathways for Europe’s Agri-Food Systems”, organised by the DIRPOLIS Institute as part of the LIGHTS Lab – Law, Institutions & Governance in Human Transitions.
The conference marks the concluding event of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence SUSTAIN – Centre of Excellence on EU Actions for Sustainable Farming and Food Systems, coordinated by Professor Mariagrazia Alabrese and funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme.
The initiative brings together scholars, representatives of European institutions and experts in the field to discuss the legacy of the European Green Deal and the future of EU policies for agriculture and food systems.
The conference focuses on three main themes: the future of the Common Agricultural Policy beyond the Green Deal; new instruments to incentivise the green transition, including carbon farming, nature credits and payments for ecosystem services; and the global dimension of the sustainability of agri-food systems.
The conference concludes three years of research, training and interdisciplinary dialogue focused on analysing the legal and policy framework for the transition towards more sustainable European agricultural and food systems.
