Who is who

Emanuele Sommario, Master Director

Emanuele Sommario is presently Associate Professor (Professore Associato) of International Law at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa (Italy). He holds a PhD in International Law from the Scuola Sant’Anna and an LLM in Public International Law from the University of Nottingham (UK). Emanuele has been Excellence Fellow at the International Law Department of the University of Geneva, Visiting Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, and Visiting Fellow at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. His main interests lay in Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law, the law on international responsibility, and International Disaster Law, and he is the author of several scholarly works on the above topics, which he teaches at under-, graduate, and postgraduate level. Since 2013 he is unit coordinator of the International Disaster Law Project, financed by the Italian Ministry for University and Research. As from 2000, he is Programme Officer at the International Training Programme for Conflict Management of the Scuola Sant’Anna. He served in several Electoral Observation Missions and was involved in training activities for the personnel of international, governmental and non-governmental organisations in Europe, the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. His latest publications include a monograph on situations of public emergency and human rights (Stati d’emergenza e trattati a tutela dei diritti umani, Giappichelli, 2018) and an edited volume on human rights protection in disaster settings (Routledge Handbook of Human Rights and Disasters, Routledge, 2018). He speaks Italian, German and English.


Elisa Piras, Master Didactic Coordinator

Elisa Piras is currently research fellow in Political Philosophy at DIRPOLIS Institute and Didactic Coordinator of the Master in Human Rights and Conflict Management. She holds a PhD in Politics, Human Rights and Sustainability from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa). After her PhD, she has worked as research fellow at the Department of Social and Political Science of Bologna University and as didactic assistant at the School of Political Science of Bologna University (Forlì and Bologna Campus), where she has worked as Adjunct Professor in Theory and History of Public Opinion. Her research focuses on International Political Theory and History of International Political Thought, with special attention to the interconnections between philosophical issues and policy analysis. She has conducted research on political liberalism and foreign policy, democratisation, human rights and migration management.


Paolo Benvenuto, Master Project Officer

Paolo Benvenuto holds a PhD in Contemporary History, a MA degree in Political Sciences, and a BA degree in Political Sciences and International Relations at the University of Pisa.

In 2016-18 he has been Logistic Coordinator of the International Programme in Humanities (IPH)  at the Department of Civilizations and Forms of Knowledges (University of Pisa) and in 2018-19 Research Fellow in Contemporary History at the same Department. 

At the moment, he works for the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna as Project Officer of the Master in Human Rights and Conflict Management .


Blerina Duli, Master Internship Coordinator

Blerina Duli is currently the Internship Coordinator of the Master in Human Rights and Conflict Management, and a research fellow at the Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Bicocca. She holds a Ph.D. in “Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution” from the University of Siena, and a Master degree in ‘Human Rights and Democracy in South East Europe’, University of Bologna.

After her PhD she has more than 10 years of experience in Master programmes in Human Rights, as part of scientific board and coordinator, at the University of Siena. Her career has been enriched from project management experiences in the non profit sector, in the field of Human Rights and Conflict Management, such as the last experience of 6 years as Head of Training and Education in a Peacebuilding NGO in Italy.
