Sustainable Mobility at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna

The Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna promotes smarter, more sustainable and safer mobility for all staff and students.

In this section you can explore the Home-to-Work Travel Plan (PSCL), as well as initiatives and services dedicated to active mobility, public and shared transport, and all the opportunities to travel more efficiently and in an environmentally responsible way within the Pisa area and across the School’s campuses.

The Home-to-Work Travel Plan (PSCL)

The Home-to-Work Travel Plan (PSCL) of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna is a strategic tool designed to promote more sustainable mobility, reduce environmental impact and improve access to the School’s sites, located throughout the Pisa area and also in Pontedera.

The plan is part of the national regulatory framework introduced by the “Decreto Rilancio” and subsequent implementing decrees, which require public institutions to adopt a PSCL on an annual basis and identify the Mobility Manager as the person responsible for planning and promoting sustainable mobility.

The 2026 PSCL was developed on the basis of surveys conducted in autumn 2024 on the travel habits of staff and students. It proposes concrete actions, calibrated to the resources available. Its main objectives are to reduce the use of private cars, encourage active mobility and public transport, improve accessibility to the School’s sites, and contribute to the quality of urban and academic life.

Initiatives already implemented include agreements with local institutions and companies, discounted subscriptions for public transport, bike sharing and trains, the installation of new cycling infrastructure, the promotion of events on sustainable mobility, and coordination activities with other universities and research centres in Pisa.

The PSCL consists of an analysis of the context and travel patterns, alongside a planning section that defines the measures to be adopted and the expected environmental, organisational and social benefits.

Objectives of the PSCL

The Home-to-Work Travel Plan of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna aims to make daily travel safer and more sustainable for staff and students, improving access to the School’s sites and reducing reliance on private vehicles. The plan promotes alternative, environmentally friendly modes of transport, with tangible benefits for both academic and urban quality of life.

Key objectives of the PSCL include:

  • Encouraging active mobility, such as walking, cycling and the use of e-scooters.

  • Promoting the use of public transport and shared mobility services.

  • Reducing congestion and pollution caused by private vehicles.

  • Optimising the organisation of spaces and parking areas.

  • Promoting solutions that reduce the need for daily commuting.

Agreements and services for sustainable mobility

The Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna has established specific agreements with institutions and mobility providers to encourage more sustainable and accessible travel options for the academic community. In particular, collaborations have been set up with Autolinee Toscane SpA for discounted public transport subscriptions, with Trenitalia for favourable conditions on rail travel, and with the PISAMO bike-sharing service to promote the use of bicycles for everyday journeys.

These initiatives form part of a broader commitment to fostering responsible mobility habits and reducing the environmental impact of travel.
