Agroecologia al centro: Open Day at the Avanzi Research Center in Pisa on June 5 Dedicated to Sustainable Agriculture
Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the University of Pisa Join Forces for a Day Focused on Agroecological Practices and Sustainable Innovation
A full day dedicated to discovering agroecological practices and field experiments aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture. The Agroecology Group of the Institute of Plant Sciences at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, together with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the “Enrico Avanzi” Agro-Environmental Research Centre of the University of Pisa, are organizing the ninth edition of the open day “Agroecology al centro”on Friday, June 5.
The event will take place at the Avanzi Research Centre (Via Vecchia di Marina 6, San Piero a Grado, Pisa) and is open to anyone interested in visiting the experimental fields, learning more about agroecology, and engaging directly with researchers.
Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to explore the interactions between agricultural crops and both wild and cultivated biodiversity, as well as discover practical agronomic solutions that farms can readily adopt to improve soil fertility and enhance the sustainability of production systems.
Open Day Program
The morning session begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Benvenuti Lecture Hall with registration, welcome coffee, and opening remarks by Angelo Canale (Enrico Avanzi Agro-Environmental Research Centre, University of Pisa), Daniele Antichi(Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Pisa), and Paolo Bàrberi (Institute of Plant Sciences, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies). At 10:15 a.m., participants will visit the experimental field trials.
The afternoon session starts at 2:45 p.m. with a new welcome and introductory session featuring Angelo Canale, Daniele Antichi, Camilla Moonen (Institute of Plant Sciences, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies), and Sara Burbi from ALL Tuscany, the Tuscan Agroecology Living Lab that brings together farmers, researchers, institutions, and local stakeholders to co-design sustainable solutions for agricultural and agri-food systems.
From 3:00 p.m., participants will be able to join additional visits to the experimental field trials and attend demonstration events showcasing projects involving research groups from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the University of Pisa.
At 5:45 p.m., a roundtable discussion entitled “What Is the Cost of Diversification?” will explore both the opportunities and challenges associated with agricultural diversification.
The day will conclude at 7:45 p.m. with a commemorative event honoring the memory of Andrea De Angeli, founder of tractorum.it, the Italian portal dedicated to agricultural machinery and agricultural engineering, and with the presentation of the “Sustainable Agriculture” Thesis Award.
The event is free of charge and open to the public.
