CAB, presentation of the eco-friendly wheelchair for accessible and sustainable bathing
Technological innovation and social inclusion in the project carried out by the BioRobotics Institute of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and Cineclub Impresa Sociale, with the contribution of the Pisa Foundation
Eco-friendly, inclusive, and easy to maneuver. This morning, at the Fondazione Dopo di Noi a Pisa Onlus – Centro Le Vele in San Giuliano Terme, “CAB – a wheelchair for an eco-friendly and social approach to bathing” was presented, an innovative project designed to make the beach and the sea truly accessible to people with motor disabilities.
CAB was created thanks to the collaboration between the BioRobotics Institute of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and the Cineclub Impresa Sociale, with the contribution of the Fondazione Pisa, and represents an important step forward in the field of accessibility and inclusion. It is a wheelchair designed to move on the beach and in semi-immersion in salt water: unlike traditional beach wheelchairs, CAB substantially reduces the physical effort required by the accompanying person, while ensuring comfort and safety for the person being transported.
The sustainable solution: a pneumatic system without electrical devices or polluting elements
From a technological point of view, the CAB wheelchair offers an original and sustainable solution: a pneumatic system that completely dispenses with electrical devices and polluting elements. Energy is stored in two compressed air carbon diving cylinders, while a single reversible pneumatic motor provides propulsion. The system thus releases clean, breathable air into the environment, making it a highly eco-friendly solution.
Scenarios in which CAB can be used
Not just marine environments. CAB can also be used in therapeutic pools, lakes, and freshwater environments. It is a technology that becomes a tool for inclusion, suitable for both children and frail elderly people, serving all those with limited or no walking ability, as well as those with temporary disabilities.
