Innovation in Organic Fertilizers: Pisa Hosts the European STRATUS Project Cross Visit with Scientific Contributions from Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies
From European research to Tuscan farmlands: Pisa will host a two-day event dedicated to exploring the future of sustainable fertilization. On June 10–11, the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies will host the cross visit of the Horizon Europe STRATUS project, a collaborative forum designed to share knowledge, connect experiences, and strengthen the transition toward more sustainable fertilization practices capable of addressing both environmental and productivity challenges in Mediterranean agriculture.
Promoted by the Tuscany Region in collaboration with the Institute of Plant Production of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, the initiative brings together researchers and stakeholders from across Europe who are engaged in the transition toward more sustainable agricultural systems. At the heart of the program are 48 European best practices selected for their innovative potential. The cross visit provides an opportunity for in-depth, field-based exploration through presentations, experience sharing, and practical demonstrations.
European Best Practices: The FERTIBIO Project
Among the selected best practices is FERTIBIO, a project coordinated by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, which investigated the use of biofertilizers and microbial biostimulants to improve crop productivity and soil health across different agricultural systems.
The project offers a concrete example of how beneficial microorganisms—such as bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi—can help reduce the use of chemical inputs, paving the way for more environmentally friendly farming practices.
The Cross Visit Program: From Theory to Field Practice
The first day, June 10, will take place at Palazzo Boyl, home to the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. The program will provide an overview of the Tuscan agricultural context and the objectives of the visit, with contributions from representatives of the Tuscany Region and the Institute of Plant Production.
The scientific sessions will be led by Dr. Elisa Pellegrino and the Plant–Soil Interactions Research Group, who will present the key themes, methodologies, and demonstration activities.
The transition from theory to practice will take place on June 11 with a visit to Società Agricola del Bamboo in San Giuliano Terme. Participants will have the opportunity to observe the direct application of microbial biostimulants on different crops. From tomato—the project's main case study—to field trials involving wheat and maize, the day will combine on-site demonstrations with discussion sessions, fostering dialogue between scientific research and agricultural practice.
