The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), one of the world's largest educational and scientific computing society along with the IEEE, recognized Alessandro Biondi, a researcher at the TeCIP Institute for Communication, Information and Perception Technologies of Sant’Anna School, with the prestigious ACM SIGBED Early Career Researcher Award.
Each year, the ACM SIGBED Early Career Researcher Award recognizes outstanding contributions by early career investigators in the area of embedded, real-time, and cyber-physical systems that have the potential for maximum impact on society. Alessandro Biondi is recognized as one of the top early career researchers in the world, and over the past five years, he has contributed to the area of embedded systems and has published more than 50 papers (so far, Biondi has received 6 awards for Best Paper) in journals and conference proceedings. In 2018, he received the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium award for the best presentation. He is the owner of two patents and co-founded a spin-off company.
In 2018, as a doctoral candidate, he also received the "EDAA Outstanding Dissertation Award 2017" by the European Design and Automation Association (EDAA) for the Best Dissertation on "New directions in software design and optimization for embedded, cyber-physical and secure systems". It was the first time the prestigious award had gone to an Italian university. Biondi joined a number of distinguished scholars from institutions and industry whose research contributed significantly to future and emerging technologies.
In April 2019, Professor Insup Lee of University of Pennsylvania and the President of ACM SIGBED will announce the recipients of the awards in Montreal - Canada, at the Cyber-Physical Systems International Conference. The ACM SIGBED International Conference on Embedded Software (EMSOFT) brings together researchers and developers from academia, industry, and government to advance the science, engineering, and technology of embedded software development. Since 2001, EMSOFT has been the premier venue for cutting-edge research in the design and analysis of software that interacts with physical processes, with a long-standing tradition for results on cyber-physical systems, which compose computation, networking, and physical dynamics. The Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK), the premier event covering all aspects of embedded systems and software, will bring together the three leading conferences (CASES, CODES+ISSS, EMSOFT), on October 13-18, 2019, in New York.
The awardees have been selected by a Selection Committee of distinguished scientists including Professor Sanjoy Baruah from University of Washington in St. Louis, Professor Rolf Ernst from Technical University of Braunschweig, Professor Janos Sztipanovits from Vanderbilt University, Professor Lothar Thiele from ETH Zurich and Professor Marilyn Wolf from Georgia Tech..
Alessandro Biondi is a researcher at the RETIS Lab of TeCIP Institute. He received his PhD degree in Emerging Digital Technologies from Sant’Anna School in 2017 under the supervision of Professor Giorgio Buttazzo and Professor Marco Di Natale.
