Two professors and a former honor student and President of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies receive one of the most prestigious honours in the Italian scientific and academic community
Pierdomenico Perata, Antonio De Simone and Giuliano Amato have been elected new members of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, one of the most prestigious honours bestowed by the Italian scientific and academic community.
Founded in 1603 and one of the oldest academies in the world, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei represents the highest level of academic excellence in Italy. Election to the Academy follows a rigorous selection process based on outstanding scientific achievements and is widely regarded as an internationally prestigious distinction, comparable to membership in institutions such as the British Royal Society and the French Académie des Sciences.
Pierdomenico Perata was elected to the Class of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology category; Antonio De Simone to the Class of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, in the Engineering Sciences category; and Giuliano Amato to the Class of Moral, Historical and Philological Sciences, in the Legal Sciences category.
The appointments also represent a prestigious recognition for the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, which already counted two professors among the members of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei: Giovanni Dosi, in the field of Social, Political and Economic Sciences, and Tullio Padovani, in the field of Legal Sciences.
Pierdomenico Perata, Full Professor of Plant Physiology and Rector of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies from 2013 to 2019, received this recognition for his academic career and research in the field of plant molecular physiology. His research, particularly on the molecular mechanisms underlying responses to oxygen deficiency (hypoxia), has made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge of how plants adapt to extreme climatic conditions, as well as to expanding our understanding of the role of hypoxia in plant development and differentiation.
Antonio De Simone is Full Professor of Structural Mechanics at the BioRobotics Institute of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. His research focuses on the theoretical and computational mechanics of biological systems and materials. He is the author of more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and has received numerous major international awards and honours, including an ERC Advanced Grant.
Giuliano Amato is a former honor student of the Medical and Legal Sciences College and served as President of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies from 2012 to 2013.
