A day dedicated to Giulio Regeni: the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Sant’Anna School stand up for academic freedom
A day of reflection, remembrance and civic engagement in the name of Giulio Regeni, ten years after the disappearance of the Italian researcher who was abducted, tortured and killed in Cairo between January and February 2016. The event will take place on 28 April from 9am at the Polo Carmignani of the University of Pisa, organised by the University in collaboration with the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna as part of the national initiative ‘Universities for Giulio Regeni’.
The project, conceived by Senator for Life Elena Cattaneo and presented on 31 March to the Senate of the Republic, involves 76 Italian universities and over 15,000 people who will bring to life an extensive programme of events between April and May dedicated to the theme of freedom of research, a founding value of the academic community.
The highlight of the event in Pisa on 28 April will be the screening of the documentary Giulio Regeni - Tutto il male del mondo, accompanied by in-depth discussions and exchanges on the themes of rights, research and the responsibility of institutions, with contributions from, among others, Senator Elena Cattaneo and Giulio Regeni’s parents, Paola Deffendi and Claudio Regeni. Also present will be Alessandra Ballerini, the lawyer who has been assisting the Regeni family in their search for the truth for almost ten years.
