International Recognition: PhD Student Luca Cinus Wins Best Student Paper Award at the Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS 2026)

Prestigious international recognitions for the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa during the Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS 2026), held in Hangzhou, China. Luca Cinus, a PhD student in Biorobotics, won the Best Student Paper Award for a paper on microrobotics, while another PhD student, Giordano De Angelis, was nominated for the Best Application Award with a study on endoscopic capsules. Both works were realized together with Professor Arianna Menciassi, principal investigator of the Surgical Robotics and Allied Technologies research area, and Professor Veronica Iacovacci, principal investigator of the Medical Robotics Lab.
Specifically, Luca Cinus’s paper focuses on the use of microrobots in minimally invasive medicine, defining the potential and limitations of Acoustic Phase Analysis. This approach represents a credible alternative to traditional ultrasound because, by analyzing the raw signal phase, it isolates the microrobot’s movement from the surrounding tissue and determines its position. The study develops a theoretical model and experimental validation to identify the physical and kinematic conditions under which the method guarantees reliable tracking, laying the groundwork for future clinical applications.
Giordano De Angelis’s paper analyzes the development of an active, multifunctional endoscopic capsule capable of reaching a target region, intervening locally, and gathering information about the environment in which it operates.
