A day dedicated to art, research and community engagement: on Saturday, June 6, the Mont’Alfonso Fortress in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana will host Proxy Village, an event celebrating the fifth year of activities of the Proximity Careproject.

Talks, research, art, prevention, dance and music are the key ingredients of an initiative designed to share the results and experiences of a project promoted by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, implemented in collaboration with the North-West Tuscany Local Health Authority (Azienda USL Toscana Nord Ovest), the municipalities of Garfagnana, Media Valle and Alta Versilia, the Region of Tuscany, and the Monasterio Foundation.

The goal of Proximity Care is to strengthen prevention and improve health, well-being and quality of life in the inland areas of the Province of Lucca by enhancing collaboration among health and social care services, local municipalities, schools, third-sector organizations and the research community, while actively involving citizens in promoting and caring for the health of individuals, communities and local territories.

The event will be directed and hosted by science communicator Marco Martinelli. Special guests throughout the day will include Alessandro Cecchi Paone and Andrea Zorzi, while the evening will feature a live performance by Leo Gassmann.

Proximity Care: A New Model for Health in Inland Areas

Proxy Village is much more than an event: it is an opportunity to share and showcase what Proximity Care has built over the years and to imagine what can still be achieved.

The project has promoted multi-screening initiatives through mobile units, developed guidance and health-promotion pathways, and implemented cardiovascular risk prevention programs for young people. It has also tested telemedicine solutions for the management of patients with chronic conditions, remote diagnostics and emergency care, as well as diabetes education and self-monitoring programs.

Through collaboration with local authorities and third-sector organizations, a Population Observatory has been established to collect and analyze the experiences of people living in inland areas. The project has also promoted initiatives addressing disability and caregiving and launched innovative experiences in collaborative governance.

The Proximity Care experience highlights the need for a new paradigm based on three pillars: transforming inland areas into laboratories for technological and social innovation, developing integrated strategies between institutions and communities, and promoting proximity-based and preventive interventions to anticipate needs, reduce inequalities and ensure environmental sustainability.
