The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies awarded at the 4th EELISA Scientific Student Competition

Students and PhD candidates from Sant’Anna School distinguished themselves in research fields ranging from bionic engineering to clinical diagnostics

The 4th edition of the EELISA Scientific Student Competition, an international initiative involving undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students from the partner universities of the European EELISA alliance, concluded successfully. During the two-day event, participants presented their research projects and engaged with scholars and experts in an interdisciplinary environment focused on scientific collaboration and the development of new academic networks.

The competition addressed topics from various disciplinary fields through scientific sessions dedicated to the most innovative and significant contributions. The event concluded with an award ceremony celebrating the works distinguished by scientific quality, originality, and research impact.


The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies received important recognitions thanks to the achievements of its students and PhD candidates.

For the Social Sciences session, Pietro Grassi, a master’s student in Statistics and Data Science, won first prize with the paper “Geopolitical and Diagnostic Barriers to Palliative Care Access in Europe”, while Hafiz Fawad Ali, a PhD candidate in Health Science, Technology and Management, received an Honorable Mention for the work entitled “When Healing Meets Pressure: A Multi-Study Investigation of Organizational Commitment in Italy’s Regional Healthcare System”. 

For the “Automation, Control, Robotics” session, Alessandro Genua, a PhD candidate in Emerging Digital Technologies, ranked second with the work entitled “Mechanical Design and Kinematic Optimization of Human-Centered Robotic Systems”, while Anastasios Tzepkenlis, a PhD candidate in Emerging Digital Technologies, received a Special Award for the work entitled “From Prediction to Prescription: A Prospective Clinical Trial of an Explainable AI Decision Support System for Personalized Robot-Assisted Stroke Rehabilitation”.

Finally, for the “Applied Science 2” session, Alberto Anelli, a master’s student in Bionics Engineering, received an Honorable Mention for the work entitled “From Spectral Physics to AI: A Hybrid Approach for Reliable Rare Earth Element Detection in Hyperspectral Imagery”.
