Sant’Anna School leads the project "reCreating Europe", financed by the EU. Three million euro and ten universities involved to measure the impact of digitisation and copyright on creativity, cultural diversity and access to knowledge

3 million euro, 36 months, 10 universities, 8 European countries, more than 25 researchers and experts are the numbers of the ambitious project "ReCreating Europe", which will be coordinated by Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and will kick off in January 2020. The project, which aims at “Rethinking digital copyright law for a culturally diverse, creative, accessible Europe”, is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program and will be led by a team coordinated by Caterina Sganga (Dirpolis Institute of Sant’Anna School) and composed by Alessandro Nuvolari and Arianna Martinelli (Institute of Economics of Sant’Anna School), with the cooperation of Nicoletta Corrocher from Bocconi University.

The project stems from the broader debated on the impact that copyright reforms have had on creativity, cultural diversity, access to culture and freedom of expression. Devising a sustainable system of digital copyright rules is a key challenge for the European legislator, which is called to protect authors and creative industries while preserving the great opportunities that digital technologies offer for the democratization of access and creation of content. With its multidisciplinary approach and its focus on five groups of stakeholders (individual authors and performers, creative industries, cultural institutions such as galleries, libraries, archives and museums, intermediaries, users), "ReCreating Europe" aims at offering innovative contributions to assess the impact of current laws, develop reform proposals, and prepare and test guidelines which may inspire the self-regulatory efforts of different stakeholders.

The Sant’Anna team will coordinate the work of colleagues and experts from Universiteit van Amsterdam, University of Glasgow, Alexander von Humboldt – Institut für Internet und Gesellschaft Gmbh, Stichting Liber, National University of Ireland Maynooth, Tartu Ulikool, Università degli Studi di Trento, Kobenhavns Universitet, Szegedi Tudomanyegyetem.
