“Seafarer Health and Safety” is the new project announced by the Institute of Communication, lnformation and Perception Technologies (TeCIP) at Sant’Anna School. The project is coordinated by Emanuele Ruffaldi, researcher at Percro (Laboratory of Perceptual Robotics), and received funding from INAIL (Italian National Insurance Institute for Employment Injuries) as part of “Piano attività di ricerca 2016/2018 – ricerca discrezionale”.

The 2-year “Seafarer Health and Safety” project is coordinated by Sant’Anna School. It involves 9 Asl (local Health Authority) offices across Italy, and the INAIL Department for occupational and environmental epidemiology - “Dimeila”.

The project is designed and intended as a tool to improve health and safety of maritime industry operators and test a range of risk management plans for the port sector. The project kickoff meeting is scheduled for July 18 in Rome. After a review into previous techniques that have been applied, the partners will provide wearable device for visual inspection also to detect personal health risks, computer vision tools for reliable acquisition of data extending the use of algorithms to 3D structures and the use of robots for the automatic processing of images.

As a research institute, PERCRO is applying Perceptual Robotics technologies to new challenges and unpredictable environments. Academics of PERCRO Lab. cooperate with INAIL DIMEILA department to assure every maritime worker safe and healthful working conditions.
