TITLE
Maps of bounded rationality, heuristics, and nudging in healthcare decision-making: conditions and opportunities for management.
DESCRIPTION
The ability of healthcare systems to deliver on their promises by improving human wellbeing depends on the quality of stakeholders’ behaviors and decisions. Management practices and professional choices impact access to innovative and sustainable care, financial sustainability, and development of technologies fostering health outcomes. This impact is both direct—through appropriateness—and indirect—through efficient resource and organizational management.
AIM
The project applies behavioral science to design management practices that reduce avoidable variation in key healthcare and pharmaceutical decisions. This includes biases and noise in drug prescriptions, test ordering, diagnoses, and market access choices for drugs and devices.
EXPECTED RESULTS
Administrative data and qualitative insights will identify causes of unnecessary variation in healthcare and pharma decisions. Behavioral science will guide the design of interventions to reduce it. These will be tested through experiments and qualitative inquiries. Effective interventions will be scaled through targeted recommendations.
