Dr. Sevgi Doğan is a Research Fellow within the group Emerging Research on International Security (ERIS) and Strategic Project: Governance for Inclusive Societies at the Dirpolis Institute of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. She is currently a collaborator in the internationalization office at the Scuola Normale Superiore as the person responsible for the SAR (Scholars at Risk Network) in Italy. She is also presently conducting a project on the reception of Antonio Gramsci in Turkey with the Fondazione Gramsci in Roma.

Dr. Doğan earned her doctorate degree in political philosophy at Scuola Normale Superiore in Aprile 2014. The dissertation investigated the place of the individual in civil society and the State in terms of his/her political, social, and economic existence through the major works of Hegel and the young Marx with a keen eye as to how the concept of the individual is positioned within their ontologies and how this positioning is reflected in their related political views. It was published by Lexington Books under the editorship of Prof. Peter Hudis and Prof. Kevin Anderson.

She did her post-doctoral research for ten months with Prof. Simonetta Bassi in the University of Pisa (2016-2017) on the Italian idealism, particularly some neo-Hegelian philosophers such as Bertrando Spaventa, Benedetto Croce, and Giovanni Gentile in relation to the materialism (of Antonio Labriola and Antonio Gramsci). The title of this post-doctoral research was “Is a nationalist philosophy possible? A investigation on the philosophy of Italian idealism and its importance for Turkey.” The main contention in this project was that a pure national philosophy is not possible. After this post-doctoral research, she got the position of visiting professor at the University of Pisa for more than 5 months (2017-2018) in order to continue and complete her current research project and in order to translate Gramsci’s Letters from Prison from Italian into Turkish. She has already submitted the translation to Alfa Publishing House. After that, she gained a visiting fellow at Scuola Normale Superiore for 6 months (2018) and worked with Prof. Roberto Esposito within the project: “Trasformazioni della sovranità, forme di governamentalità e dispositivi di governance nell’era globale”.

She is currently working on a book called The Intellectual Problem in Gramsci and Rosa Luxemburg which discusses the role of the intellectual within the philosophical and conceptual perspectives. Her primary research area is the modern and contemporary political philosophy, Marxism, Hegelianism, —German and Italian—materialism and idealism, nationalism, the Kurdish Question, the social and political modernization of Turkey, the role of intellectual, academic freedom and freedom of expression, democracy, and ontology. Regarding ontology, the main concern of her studies in political philosophy is to question the existence of the individual as human being in current society—which refers to only a particular type, that is the capitalist, and to reveal the fact that their existence is very much related to the type of regime. In Hegelian and Marxian studies, the social, political and economic ontology of individuals is the basic departure point of the relevant discussions. Related to the political philosophy, she is interested in the women question and feminist movement with its particular relation to and critiques of Marxism.  Her aim is to examine the problems of current societies, such as ethnicity, racism, gender issues, and problems of citizenship, by means of economic and political theory.
