An increasing number of Sant’Anna School faculty members are selected to participate in international conferences for their successful research careers. Recently, Paolo Barberi, professor of agronomy and field crops at Sant’Anna School Institute of Life Sciences, agroecology research group leader has been invited to give a keynote lecture on “Functional agrobiodiversity: approach, examples, and applicability to banana cropping systems’ at X International Symposium on Banana/ISHS ProMusa Symposium, in Montpellier, France.

The symposium co-organized by CIRAD and the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), will take place in Montpellier on October 10-14. The main focus of the symposium will be on “Agroecological approaches to promote innovative banana cropping systems”. The banana production is vital to the economy of many tropical and subtropical regions; however, banana farming is pesticide- intensive because bananas are grown in monocultures for extended periods without crop rotation.

Efforts towards a more sustainable agriculture are globally needed and banana cropping system requires a rigorous reconsideration of the methods, to protect the environment and public health.
