City Nature Challenge 2023, between April 28 and May 1 the international urban biodiversity photo competition as part of the Bioblitz Monte Pisano initiative
Great success for Bioblitz Monte Pisano, the day organized by the Center of Plant Sciences of the Sant'Anna School to discover the biodiversity of Monte Pisano. The 130 places for the Saturday, April 29 event are indeed already sold out. You can however contribute to the initiative by participating in the City Nature Challenge 2023 prize, the international biodiversity photo competition for the most nature observations collected and recorded on the free iNaturalist app between April 28 and May 1, 2023.
How to participate in the City Nature Challenge
Everybody can participate in the City Nature Challenge (not only the 130 BioBlitz participants). Just take photos of plants, mushrooms, bugs, birds, mammals or reptiles, or whatever, in the Mount Pisano area and upload it to the free iNaturalist app between April 28 and May 1, 2023 (contest closes at 7 p.m.).
The system is able to recognize the geographical coordinates of the photo, and the reports submitted are added to the Monte Pisano project, becoming a valuable input for the purposes of the contest among the 16 Italian sites. It is possible to try to identify the object in the photo through the appropriate iNaturalist function; alternatively, by leaving the object anonymous, experts who see the photo will try to identify the organism.
Researchers from the Sant'Anna School will later analyze this data and compare the observations collected from the citizens with the scientific data they are collecting for the FRAMEwork project.
The City Nature Challenge data recorded in the Monte Pisano area will be uploaded to iNaturalist and will soon be available along with information from the entire network of Framework's farmer clusters via Recodo, an online knowledge exchange platform currently in beta testing.
