The 5th ENDURE Summer School will take place at SIAF of Volterra from 10 to 14 October 2016. These summer school activities for PhD students are part of the Education activities envisaged in the European Research Group ENDURE (European Network for the Durable Exploitation of Crop Protection Strategies; http://www.endure-network.eu/).

The theme of this year is ‘The role of IPM in mitigating effects of climate change on pest dynamics –modelling approaches’. Climate change, by inducing variability of temperature, rainfall and atmospheric CO2 concentration levels, is likely to impact many agricultural production situations worldwide. In addition to the direct impact on crop yield, climate change will also affect biocenosis dynamics. In particular, pests (pathogens, animal pests and weeds) and beneficial dynamics will be affected, thereby leading to new injury profiles and associated quantitative and qualitative damage to crop production. Given the complexity of the crop-soil-atmosphere-pest-beneficial system, modelling is a key scientific approach to help design more resilient cropping systems to biotic stress, with limited reliance on pesticides.

The event is coordinated by Anna-Camilla Moonen of the Institute of Life Sciences of the Scuola Sant’Anna and together with Jean-Noel Aubertot (INRA, France) a dynamic programme has been developed featuring international experts on IPM, modelling and climate change. Basic theoretical lectures on Integrated Pest Management, modelling approaches and climate change will be alternated with  practical information and teamwork. The participating PhD students from all over the world will learn how to integrate the climate change aspects into simple IPM models.

Two guest lectures will be given by prominent Professors.

On Monday morning, 10 October, Emeritus Professor at the Pierre and Marie Curie University of Paris, Katia Laval, will talk about certainties and uncertainties of global warming (http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr/Members/klaval).

On Thursday morning, 13 October, Professor Marcello Donatelli, Director of the Research Centre for Industrial Crops of the Italian CREA in Bologna, will talk about how to integrate pests into crop models (http://cin.entecra.it/index.php?c=62&id=20).

Participation to these guest lectures is open to the public but confirmation of participation is needed for logistic reasons and can be send to moonen@sssup.it.
