The 2020-2021 teaching will be through highly interactive, multimedia sessions. Participants will be able to join the online sessions led by academics from the Biorobotics and TeCIP Institutes on Engineering Research and Advanced Communications Engineering at Sant’Anna School.
Optical Wireless (OW) communication is attracting a growing interest, thanks to many practical demonstrations: it can be used in indoor, in underwater and in space environments for a wide range of applications, with different bit rates and distance specs. The OW systems have the potential to offer high-speed data transfer and the capacity to tackle interference, jamming and security issues to ensure reliable communications. In this seminar, we identify the main research topics and achievements in OW communications. We discuss the role of Sant’Anna researchers in pushing the limits of research ( e.g. they set record speed values in LED-based indoor systems, as well as in outdoor transmissions of laser-based transmitter); we also present the working prototypes that they realized (e.g. LiFi, localization systems, underwater communication systems) including also those developed in partnership with industry leaders. Finally, we present our latest research projects in the area of intra-satellite and inter-satellite communication technologies.
Ernesto Ciaramella has more than twenty-five years research experience in optical communications, focused on various issues (components, propagation impairments, systems and networks). He has been working with various companies and research centers in optical communication, including the Telecom Italia Lab, where he was part of the working group on optical transmission systems, including field trials. Since 2002, he has been Professor at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, where he established a research group working on optical devices and wireless systems. Prof. Ciaramella participated in several national and international research projects. He was/is the Principal Investigator of projects TOSCA (Italian Ministry MUR-funded), COCONUT (EU- funded FP7-STREP), TOWS (ESA Project) and FOCS (ASI-Project). He has served as a reference person of several industry‑driven projects. He published more than 250 papers and co-authored 24 international patents.
