The Institute of Economics of the Sant’Anna School and EMbeDS (a Department of Excellence for Economics and Management in the era of Data Science funded by the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research) seek expressions of interest to identify potential candidates for one full-time non-tenure track 5-year Assistant Professor position (RTD-A)

Successful candidates will have a PhD in Economics, Statistics, Data Science or related areas, a strong record of research and teaching, and an ability to operate in teams and across traditional disciplinary boundaries. They will work on statistical and computational methods for the analysis of massive, structured and complex data (e.g., networks, longitudinal, spatial, functional and/or compositional data) used for the study of innovation processes, e.g., in the Science Technology & Innovation (STI) and industrial dynamics domains – thus contributing to several of the research areas targeted by EMbeDS, including ‘Innovation and the 4th Industrial Revolution’ and ‘Industrial dynamics, competitiveness and financial markets’.

In the Italian VQR 2011-2014 research quality evaluation, the Institute of Economics ranked among the top departmental units in Economics and Management, and the School ranked 2nd among universities. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the School ranked 1st in Italy, and 149th and 7th among, respectively, all and "young" universities worldwide. Successful candidates will thus join a nationally and internationally recognized faculty – and interact with a dynamic and growing community of data scientists in Pisa. They will also be involved in teaching, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, and be connected with the PhD program in Economics of Sant’Anna School and with the PhD program in “AI & Society” coordinated by the University of Pisa, of which the Sant’Anna School has recently become a partner – this is one of five programs in the novel PhD-AI.it nation-wide initiative.

With three schools for advanced studies, a large public university and many other public and private scientific hubs, Pisa offers an outstanding research environment – as well as a very rich cultural scene and excellent quality of life, in the heart of the historic heritage and natural beauty of the Tuscany region. Pisa has an international airport, and high-speed railroad connections to Rome, Milan and several other Italian cities.

Interested individuals should send inquiries to embeds@santannapisa.it by July 15, 2021, including a cover letter motivating their interest, a CV, a description of current research (3-page maximum) and one of teaching activities (1-page maximum). All correspondence and expressions of interest will be kept strictly confidential. Knowledge of the Italian language is not required, but the ability to teach in English is mandatory. The School guarantees equal gender opportunities in recruitment and career, and welcomes applications from women.

Disclaimer: this is not yet a job vacancy advertisement. Based on the expressions of interest for the position, the Sant’Anna School for Advanced Studies will determine whether or not to open a public competition (pursuant art. 18 of the Italian Law 240/2010, or a direct call, pursuant Italian Law 230/2005).
