Sant’Anna School in Pisa is looking for talented and motivated graduates of all nationalities with backgrounds in economics and management, political science, law, engineering, bioscience, biodiversity and medicine. Your PhD program will have a huge impact on your future career, and it is important to consider factors such as Pisa location, tuition, academics, and campus housing while selecting a university in Europe.

Sant’Anna School offers 10 PhD programs and 68 merit-based scholarships. Scholarships are offered by the Italian Ministry for Education, and a number of other organizations and companies. A number of PhD projects may be supported by external funding. Details of any arising scholarship opportunities will be noted at the specific PhD positions page.

Sant’Anna School believes in rewarding talents to help students achieve their academic goals and the scholarships recognize graduates who have the potential to achieve significant success in their future careers. The small size of our doctoral groups creates educational advantages and students receive individualized attention from their advisors.

Academic success is important because it decides the positive outcomes of the PhD students. Successful PhD students from Sant’Anna School had more opportunities to choose their future jobs. Their higher levels of education proved to be more effective to tackle the technologically demanding occupations they would perform in the future. PhD students of Sant’Anna School are offered the opportunity to study abroad in most prestigious partner universities and institutions. They have high level of proficiency, are intrinsically motivated and goal oriented; in three months after the defense of their doctoral thesis they all have found a job.

In 2017, Sant’Anna School moved to 9th place in the Times Higher Education ranking of the world’s top 10 young universities; only Sant’Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore appear in the top 10 list of young universities ranking. In 2017, Sant’Anna School celebrates its 30th anniversary and has recently announced a formal partnership with Scuola Normale Superiore confirming their mutual commitment to scientific excellence and their top positions in the Italian higher education system. All of their doctoral programs are designed to develop outstanding educational researchers. As a Joint PhD student of Scuola Normale Superiore, Sant’Anna School and IUSS Pavia, students will be members of a select group of outstanding scholars and researchers who study and collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment.

Joint PhD students earn an interdisciplinary four-year degree in Economics (Sant’Anna School and IUSS Pavia), in Political science, European politics and International relations focusing on comparative political studies (Sant’Anna School, University of Pisa, University of Florence, and University of Siena), and in Data Science, to become a data scientist who plays a central role in developing data products at wide scale (Sant’Anna School, Scuola Normale Superiore,  IMT Alti Studi LuccaUniversity of Pisa and CNR).

To be considered for graduate admission and scholarships, applicants must meet the requirements of the graduate program. The minimum graduate admission requirements are: a bachelor’s degree (earned within October 31, 2017) or international degree that is equivalent to Italian bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution.
