EELISA, European Engineering Learning Innovation and Science Alliance, brings together ten higher education institutions (engineering schools, universities of technology, and general universities) from eight European countries with the aim of defining and implementing a shared model of a European engineer rooted in society. According to the EELISA Governing Board statement, approved on April 19, 2021, EELISA's vision is to "launch European degree programmes that will herald the next generation of European 'Renaissance' engineers capable of pursuing a brilliant career and driving sustainable change in a multidisciplinary, diverse, multilingual, and global environment, leveraging European values". The new European engineers will be engaged professionals and citizens ready to work in interdisciplinary, multilingual, diverse, and pan-European environments, facilitating Europe's transformation into a just and prosperous society with a modern, resource-efficient economy. The acronym "EELISA" is a tribute to women engineers and was inspired by Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu (1887–1973), one of the first female engineering graduates in the world. Embodying the core elements of the EELISA alliance thanks to her multicultural and cross-border background, she contributed socially to engineering by proposing innovative methods for mineral analysis.
