Abstract
This seminar will explore Chad’ political dynamics as a lens for understanding regional conflicts in Africa. Chad is strategically positioned amid escalating crises: Sudan to the east, Libya to the north, the Central African Republic to the south, and Niger and the Sahel to the west. Invited speakers with extensive research experience in the country will question whether Chad therefore should be seen as providing a buffer against or a platform for conflict expansion. We will examine how domestic and transnational dynamics are intertwined, covering the aftermath of the 2024 elections, domestic unrest, and challenges posed by rebel groups and jihadist formations. Following nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule and major human rights violations, Chad navigates a pivotal transition under President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. The discussion will highlight the international implications of Chad’s termination of its defense pact with France, the influence of new players like the UAE, and the shifting landscape of Africa’s security partnerships.
