Acknowledgements: Samuele Bernardi, a honour student of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, wins first place in the award dedicated to David Sassoli for the best undergraduate theses

The 3rd edition of the 'Miglior tesi di laurea David Sassoli' Prize , an award aimed at young students from Tuscan universities, which counts on the patronage of the European Parliament, was held in Florence and this year focused on the theme 'Europe, Regions and Citizens'.
The examining board, chaired by Edoardo Bressanelli, professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, and composed of Enrico Borghetto, of the University of Florence, Vincenzo Bove, of the Scuola IMT Alti Studi in Lucca, Guglielmo Meardi, of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Luca Verzichelli , of the University of Siena, Luca Paladini , of the University for Foreigners in Siena, Saulle Panizza , of the University of Pisa, Sarah St. John, of the European University Institute, awarded first place to Samuele Bernardi, honour student at the Sant'Anna School and Political Science student at the University of Pisa, with the thesis “From EU strategic autonomy to EU public order and security. Towards the framing of an EU strategic security?”. The winner said he was “honored to have received this prize named in memory of President David Sassoli, a great Europeanist”.
The ceremony
The ceremony was attended by Antonio Mazzeo, president of the Regional Council, Francesco Gazzetti, chairman of the European Policy Committee, Alessandra Vittorini, wife of the former president of the European Parliament, and, through a video message, Pina Picerno, vice president of the European Parliament.
In addition to the first runner-up, four other winners were awarded, ranked second ex aequo: Giulio Buoncristiani, a graduate of the University of Pisa, Beatrice Marin, Gabriele Sciuto and Alberto Tognarelli, graduates of the University of Florence. Special mention to the thesis of Tanja Hilpold, a graduate of the University of Florence, for the cognitive effort she demonstrates in reconstructing the legal characteristics of the sanctions introduced by the European Union against Russia following the aggression against Ukraine.
