An innovative vehicle dedicated to multi-cancer screening programmes (mammography, HPV, HCV and colorectal) to bring prevention closer to communities in inland areas. This is the goal of the “Domus” mobile unit, inaugurated today at the Poppi Community Centre, created thanks to PNRR funds allocated to the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa – within the THE (Tuscany Health Ecosystem) – which have enabled ISPRO (Institute for the Study, Prevention and Network of Oncology) to equip itself with this new mobile unit. The initiative is the result of collaboration between the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies and ISPRO, with the involvement of the South-East Tuscany Local Health Authority to test the proximity prevention project for inland areas in the field.

This afternoon's inauguration was attended by Sabina Nuti, professor at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and scientific director of the Proximity Care and THE Spoke 10 projects, Simona Dei, general manager of ISPRO, Antonella Valeri, administrative director of ISPRO, Roberto Gusinu, health director of ISPRO and scientific advisor for the Domus project, Marzia Sandroni, director of the Casentino district of the South-East Tuscany Local Health Authority, Alessandro Cosimi, director of the Screening Unit of the South-East Tuscany Local Health Authority, and Roberta Casini, health manager for ANCI Tuscany, as well as the mayors of the local area.

The next stops for the “Domus” Mobile Unit

After its inaugural stop in Casentino, which saw widespread and heartfelt participation from the local community, the “Domus” Mobile Unit will visit other inland areas of Tuscany in order to increase participation in cancer screening and bring prevention services closer to more remote communities.

Statements

‘With the Domus Mobile Unit, the intention is to bring cancer prevention directly to the most remote areas, where there is often lower participation in screening,’ emphasises the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani. ‘Prevention is a priority for the Tuscany Region and is one of the most effective tools for ensuring high standards of health protection for all citizens.’

“The challenge of the project, which was launched following an initial trial in Garfagnana with the Proximity Care project,” says Sabina Nuti, professor at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, 'is to test innovative models of care, bringing health services closer to communities. The idea of being able to carry out all cancer screening tests in a single appointment thanks to the Mobile Domus vehicle is a concrete example of how research and innovation can be translated into tools that serve people, close to home and in an environmentally sustainable way."

‘In oncology, prevention is one of the most effective tools we have at our disposal,’ comments ISPRO General Manager Simona Dei. ‘This vehicle will allow us to reach those who live far from large centres, reducing inequalities and increasing adherence to screening programmes.’

‘Casentino is a large area with a population spread across small municipalities, a perfect example of a peripheral area,’ explains Marzia Sandroni, Director of the Casentino District Area. ‘Having a mobile unit dedicated to prevention means bringing services closer to citizens and strengthening the prevention network.’

‘Cancer screening is essential for the early detection of any diseases,’ concludes Alessandro Cosimi, Director of the UOC Screening Asl Toscana sud est. ‘With the Domus Mobile Unit, we will be able to guarantee more widespread checks and encourage greater participation among the population.’
