Francesca Chiaromonte, Professor of Statistics at the Institute of Economics of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, has been elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. The title of Fellow is awarded in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the advancement of science and the community. Chiaromonte is one of the very few Italians among the 449 new Fellows in the 2025 cohort.
"I am deeply honored to receive this recognition, which for me represents an important confirmation of a scientific journey built over decades when data have become increasingly abundant, complex, and essential to scientific research," Chiaromonte commented. "My work has focused on the development of statistical methodology in close dialogue with diverse application domains. Thanks to the continuous interaction between methods and applications, I have been able to contribute to biomedical research, 'omics' sciences, and the study of the socio-economic impacts of climate change."
Francesca Chiaromonte was elected Fellow in the Statistics section of AAAS, ‘distinguished contributions to the field of statistics, the development of methods for the analysis of large, complex and structured data, and their application in the biomedical and social sciences.’ Chiaromonte, who holds a Master's degree in Statistical and Economic Sciences from the University of Rome La Sapienza and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Minnesota, has been a Fellow of the American Statistical Association since 2016 and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics since 2022. She currently serves as the scientific coordinator of the Department of Excellence L’EMbeDS (Economics, Management, and Law in the era of Data Science) at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and is the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Statistics for the Life Sciences at the Pennsylvania State University.
“This recognition is the culmination of an exceptional scientific career, we are proud of Francesca and of her contribution to the School's research and education activities," commented Andrea Roventini, Director of the Sant'Anna Institute of Economics. "Her election as AAAS Fellow rewards the School's investment in recruiting international profiles and developing a critical mass in Data Science through the Department of Excellence.”
