New location for the Sant'Anna School in the historic centre of Pisa: Palazzo Pilo Boyl will house the new Rectorate, classrooms and labs to consolidate training and research activities in the Social Sciences
‘This is another important achievement for the Sant'Anna School, the result of a project that has been going on for years’. With these words, Rector Sabina Nuti inaugurated the new premises of the Sant'Anna School, in the historic centre of Pisa, a few metres from the main building. Palazzo Pilo Boyl (via Santa Cecilia 24), now houses classrooms, spaces and laboratories to consolidate training and advanced research activities, third mission in the Social Sciences, with the new headquarters of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Sustainability and Climate and part of the Institute of Economics.
But that's not all: the historic building, brought back to life thanks to a multi-year agreement with the owner, Dr. Alessandra Pilo Boyl, becomes the School's new representative seat, with the new offices of the Rector's Office, the Managing Director, and the Boardroom.
Also important in the renovation was the role of the Fondazione Il Talento all'Opera, which financed the construction of a multimedia classroom inside the building.
‘With this new location, we also want to strengthen our relationship with the city. Every last Friday of the month, the Palazzo will be open to the citizens, who will have the opportunity to visit all our new spaces,’ says Rector Sabina Nuti.
The new spaces
The new premises in Palazzo Pilo Boyl have a total area of almost 2000 square metres, are spread over three floors and have a distribution of rooms arranged around the inner garden.
The ground floor houses the reception, some administrative offices and six classrooms for lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences. There is also a large study room. In particular, the Palazzo's characteristic ‘stables’ have been transformed into a prestigious multimedia classroom thanks to the contribution of the Il Talento all'Opera Foundation.
On the first floor are the reception rooms. On the side of the building facing Via Santa Cecilia, in particular, is the music room, a frescoed room overlooking the terrace that runs along all the rooms on the first floor. This floor also houses the hall of the Board of Directors, the offices of the Rector's Office and the General Management, and the Deans, Vice-Chancellors and Evaluation Board room. The portion of the building facing Via Fucini houses the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Sustainability and Climate.
The second floor of the building houses offices and research laboratories of the Institute of Economics.
The statements
‘In order to fulfil our mission in the best possible way, infrastructure is essential to provide suitable places for researchers, students and staff to work,’ explains Rector Sabina Nuti. "Palazzo Pilo Boyl is being made available to the School after an appropriate restoration that served to make the spaces functional and to house classrooms and laboratories for training and research".
“The opening ceremony of Palazzo Pilo Boyl has a special importance, because it means reappropriation of urban spaces. It is a redevelopment of a building that has been underutilized for decades, conducted in collaboration with the superintendence, which now becomes another significant part of the Sant'Anna School. Redeveloping these spaces means giving new life to the city,” says Pisa Mayor Michele Conti, who attended the inauguration.
