Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025: the Sant'Anna School of Pisa ranks 49th in the world and 3rd in Italy in the new ranking released by Times Higher Education on interdisciplinary research
The Sant'Anna School ranks 49th in the world and 3rd in Italy in the new ‘Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) 2025’, the ranking released by Times Higher Education ( THE) on scientific multidisciplinarity. The ranking, produced in collaboration with Schmidt Science Fellows, is in its first edition and assesses the contribution of universities to interdisciplinary scientific research, which is considered fundamental for tackling major global challenges. The 2025 edition focused on the natural and technological sciences, and included disciplines such as Computer Science, Engineering, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.
The ranking analysed 1,023 universities in 92 countries worldwide: of these, 749 made it into the final ranking. The evaluation criteria included 11 performance indicators divided into three key areas, each representing a stage of the research project life cycle: input (funding), process (measures of success, facilities, administrative support and promotion) and output (publications, research quality and reputation). The methodology adopted by THE was based on 157 million citations; 18 million research publications; survey responses from over 20,000 scholars worldwide.
‘This is a result that rewards the Scuola Sant'Anna's commitment to interdisciplinarity. In recent years, we have created two interdisciplinary research centres on sustainability and climate change and on health sciences, areas in which an interdisciplinary approach is essential,' says Rector Sabina Nuti.
