Robotic rehabilitation, a survey to collect patients' needs and guide the research of the Fit4MedRob project

Today, technology offers the possibility of designing and building increasingly advanced robotic rehabilitation tools: but do the current lines of research actually reflect the needs of patients?
To answer this question, a group of experts in technological rehabilitation, with the collaboration of some association representatives, designed and carried out a survey to collect patients' needs. 

Involving patients to meet their needs

The survey is part of the growing trend in international research to involve patients and their caregivers in the design of projects in order to arrive at results that meet their actual needs.

 "Fit for Medical Robotics (Fit4MedRob)"  is an initiative coordinated by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council) and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa and supported by the Italian government within the framework of the National Plan for Complementary Investments to the PNRR. The project, which has been awarded a total of EUR 128 million in funding, sees the participation of 25 partners, including 11 Universities and Research Centres, 11 IRCCSs and Clinical Centres, and 3 industrial entities.
It is an initiative that aims to revolutionise current rehabilitation and care models for people of all ages, with reduced or absent motor, sensory and/or cognitive functions, through the use of new robotic and digital technologies, at all stages of the rehabilitation process, from prevention to home care in the chronic phase.

"Italy is a country at the forefront in the field of bioengineering of rehabilitation, and Fit4MedRob is the right initiative at the right time to try to bridge the gap between research and the market. Understanding in depth the needs of the actors involved, starting with the patients, is necessary in order to design from the earliest stages systems capable of providing clinically and socially valid, as well as economically sustainable, answers,' says Christian Cipriani, professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and scientific director of the initiative.
