Of the 200 universities included in the QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS is a leading global higher education company, best known for publishing one of the world’s most popular university ranking systems) world university rankings, Sant’Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore improved their position compared with last year, thanks to higher rates of citations of research by other academics. Sant’Anna School is 167th having risen 25 places from 192nd last year. Scuola Normale is 175th having risen from 192nd. In Italy, Sant’Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore claim the second and third spot while the Politecnico di Milano has maintained the top position and has occupied the 156th place in the global rankings. Thirty Italian institutions have been evaluated by QS. Only Politecnico di Milano, Sant’Anna, Normale and Università di Bologna (now 180th from 188th) ranked in the top 200 QS World University Rankings.
The QS World University Rankings assesses universities on four performance indicators: “Academic Reputation”, “Employer Reputation”, “Faculty/Student Ratio”, “Citations per Faculty”. To be eligible for inclusion, institutions must teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Thanks to increased citations, Sant’Anna School’s improved ranking (in the top 20 globally) was the result of having talented and committed staff. The “Faculty/Student Ratio” results indicate that the two institutions in Pisa are the only Italian universities ranked in top 100 (Normale 34th and Sant’Anna 68th). Sant’Anna School has claimed a higher position in “Citations per Faculty number” ranking (Normale 69th and Sant’Anna 18th). Data and indicators are derived from Scopus/Elsevier database spanning 2012-2017.
