From Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa to the Clinton Foundation (the only Italian female student) for the Class '22 of the Clinton Global Initiative University. This is the story of Elena Del Pupalumna of Agricultural Sciences and Plant Biotechnologies, who has just been selected by the Foundation of US President Clinton in a cohort of young leaders to act against climate change and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.

The Sant'Anna alumna has been selected for a 12-month program for young leaders, to develop and accelerate social impact ideas and strategies. Thousands of candidates globally applied to the selection, which consisted in the evaluation of a project proposal. The project of Elena Del Pup, which impressed Bill Clinton for its novelty and simplicity, is called “The Good Scientists”, to highlight the idea to connect scientific disciplines under the collective term Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) with the third sector.

Thanks to this project, Elena Del Pup will access a coaching and development program through personalized mentorship with the global network of Clinton Global Initiative alumni, and funding opportunities from partner organizations. The Sant'Anna alumna will also attend a summit hosted by President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton to learn how innovative leaders transform their committments to action. Past speakers include Vice President US Kamala Harris.

“An effective dialogue between science and society is missing. This means that there is scientific, or Stem knowledge that isn't transferred to civil society to attain societal goals and to rise up to environmental, climate and social challenges. Thanks to my ‘Committment to Action’ I will work towards a transparent and trustworthy channel of communication between science and the third sector, to achieve equity in the access to scientific knowledge in all fields”.

In summer 2022, Elena Del Pup will contribute with her experience to the Stem orientation courses of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies: 50 highly talented female high school students from families with parents without higher education will take part in this effort to foster social mobility. A chance for future Stem students to learn about the opportunities offered by Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies.

Congratulations to Elena Del Pup – remarks the Rector Sabina Nuti – for this achievement that confirms how Stem subjects need female enthusiasm and energy to contribute to society alongside Social Sciences. The interdisciplinarity offered by the curriculum at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies is what contributed to Elena’s selection in the program of the Clinton Foundation. I am looking forward to listen to her intervention at the next Stem orientation courses for highly talented female students from first generation families. I hope that the talent and merit of our alumna will inspire many other young women – concludes Sabina Nuti – to approach university education and to choose scientific subjects”.
