As stated above, one of the aims of Scuola Sant’ Anna and, consequently, also of the ITPCM, is to include in the courses the knowledge acquired through the latest research activities.

Throughout the years, the ITPCM conducted advanced research in many different areas, including human rights, humanitarian interventions, the electoral field, counter-terrorism law, migration and protection of vulnerable groups, cyber security, conflict management and the national and international normative frameworks related to disaster preparedness and prevention and response to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) events.

Thanks to the intense and in-depth research activities conducted, several volumes have been edited and many articles were published, both in national and international renowned academic journals. As an example, among the latest and most important publications, it is possible to mention the book “The Duty of Care of International Organizations Towards Their Civilian Personnel” edited, among the others, by Prof. Andrea de Guttry: the founder and current Director of the ITPCM. The book is a milestone, as it represents the first comprehensive publication on the matter.

Another example of the research activities conducted by the ITPCM is the 3-year project (2020-2023) on “International legal obligations related to Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery from CBRN events and status of their implementation in Italy”, funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). The project, which is included in the high-profile PRIN Programme (Progetti di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale) and coordinated by Scuola Sant’ Anna, with the collaboration of the Universities of Florence, Bologna and Turin, will contribute significantly to the enhancement of the Italian and European CBRN resilience.
