The HORIZON 2020 - 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) is a joint initiative between the European Commission and the European ICT industry (ICT manufacturers, telecommunications operators, service providers, SMEs and researcher Institutions). The main objective of 5Growth is the technical and business validation of 5G technologies to empower verticals industries through AI-driven automated technologies enabling the simultaneous use of the infrastructure.

Sant’Anna School is one of the main contributors to 5G PPP developing advanced 5G trials (under the supervision of Professor Luca Valcarenghi at the TeCIP Institute) across multiple vertical industries in three real operational environments and applications - Industry 4.0, Transportation and Energy.

The 5G Infrastructure project’s consortium, formed by 21 partners from seven European countries, has experts involved in 5G spectrum harmonization and regulatory issues, 5G from the verticals perspective, 5G trials and pre-commercial launches, 5G roll out and developments.

AI-driven automated and shareable 5G end-to-end solution will achieve key business and performance targets. 5Growth will automate the process for supporting diverse industry verticals through a vertical-oriented frontend and increase exploitation opportunities of Phase 2 5G-TRANSFORMER project.

Multiple use cases of vertical industries will be field-trialled in four vertical-owned sites in close collaboration with the vendors and the operators of the project. 5Growth will leverage on the results of Phase 2 for slicing, virtualization and multi-domain solutions for the creation of vertical services. Current developments on spectrum harmonization for 5G in Europe include high-speed video-enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low latency communications and massive machine type communications. Higher frequencies in 5G, aggregation of different signals as a closed loop system, and the complex interference effects need to be mapped.

Nine use cases in three pilot sectors, namely Industry 4.0, Transport, and Energy, will be field-trialed on four vertical-owned sites in Spain, Italy, and Portugal. The project, launched in June 2019, will define building blocks that will be developed and demonstrated integrating multiple vertical industries: Vertical Slicer as the logical entry point (i.e., one stop shop) for verticals to support the creation of their respective transport slices in a short time-scale (in the order of minutes). A Service Orchestrator to orchestrate the federation of transport networking and computing resources from multiple domains and manage their allocation to slices and a Mobile Transport and Computing Platform as the underlying unified transport stratum for integrated fronthaul and backhaul networks.

The next full 5G standardization can be expected over the next decade. In terms of impact towards standardization bodies (Standard Developing Organizations), the verticals in the consortium will also be offered an opportunity to influence ongoing 5G standards by leveraging the involvement of leading experts. The development of new communication networks is dependent on the emergence of globally accepted standards in order to ensure interoperability, economies of scale with affordable cost for system deployment and end users. This Public and Private Partnership aims to have European industry driving the development of 5G standards and exploit at least 20% of the 5G SEP (standards essential patents).
