Call for applications: starting from November 20th, 2025
Deadline: December 14th, 2025

In 2025, Sant'Anna School signed an agreement with the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation (ISSNAF) to facilitate access for qualified students to universities and advanced research centers in North America, with the aim of promoting high-level study and training experiences. The agreement is founded by the PNRR whithin the MERITA project (CUP J51I24000380006).

The School, in collaboration with ISSNAF, selects students regularly enrolled in its PhD programs who wish to undertake a period of study and research training at universities or advanced research centers in North America. Through ISSNAF’s matchmaking service, students may be hosted by Italian researchers and faculty members abroad when a match is found based on shared research interests.

Each selected candidate will be awarded a scholarship funded by the School, subject to the availability of funds and taking into account any other scholarships already obtained and usable for the same purpose.

The call for applications provides for the selection of a maximum of 5 doctoral students regularly enrolled at the School, with the possibility of assigning a higher number subject to verification of the availability of funds.

The amount of the individual scholarships awarded to successful candidates will, in any case, be between €2,000 and €8,000.

The list of ISSNAF contacts (Italian faculty and researchers in North America) is available here. You may also identify and include any additional contacts in North America in the designated field within the application form.

In order to participate in the selection process, applicants must:

  • be Italian citizens or foreign nationals residing in Italy;
  • be regularly enrolled in a Ph.D. program at the School;
  • declare their intention to undertake a period of study and training at a university or other research institute in North America of clear global significance;
  • undertake to begin the training period within two months of the publication of the ranking list
