Clarifications and notes for the Medical Sciences area

Candidates for Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies competition at the time of the registration on Universitaly:

  • Are NOT required to indicate the University of Pisa for the attendance of the filter semester
  • Are NOT required to indicate the University of Pisa in the list of universities where they can enroll in the second semester 

The call for Medical Sciences is articulated in two phases: two written tests and an oral test. It is possible to apply for admission to the I,II and III year. At the end of the tests the Board shall draw up a single overall ranking of merit.

1st year

To be admitted to the first year, candidates will have to follow the specific requirements defined in the ministerial decree that annually defines the modalities of access to the degree courses in Medicine and Surgery.

Written tests

  1. Biology essay
  2. Essay chosen by the candidate between the following options: chemistry; physics

Oral test

A discussion on all subjects included in the written tests and an interview intended to assess a candidate’s motivation/disposition for the School’s programmes, their aptitude for their chosen subject area and for campus life.


2nd year

For the second year of Medical Sciences, candidates:

1. must have obtained, in the academic year 2025/2026, a degree that gives access to Italian Universities;

2. must be enrolled to a Master degree in Medicine and Surgery in an Italian or foreign Univeristy in the a.a. 2025/2026 and obtained, at the date of the oral test, the minimu CFU required from the University of Pisa for the incoming transfer;

3. must have obtained an average score of no less than 27/30 in exams taken up to the date of their application.

Written tests

  1. An essay on life sciences (issues concerning the relationship between medicine and biology)
  2. An essay chosen by the candidate between the following options: biology-genetics; chemistry-preparatory biochemistry; embryology-histology

Oral test

A discussion on all subjects included in the written test, solely for study programmes completed as part of the outgoing Degree Course, and an interview intended to assess a candidate’s motivation/disposition for the School’s programmes, their aptitude for their chosen subject area and for campus life.


3rd year

For the third year of Medical Sciences, candidates:

  1. must have obtained in the academic year 2023/2024a degree that gives access to Italian Universities;
  2. must be enrolled to a Master degree in Medicine and Surgery in an Italian or foreign Univeristy in the a.a. 2024/2025 and obtained, at the date of the oral test, the minimu CFU required from the University of Pisa for the incoming transfer;
  3. must have obtained an average score of no less than 27/30 in exams taken up to the date of their application.

Written tests

  1. An essay on life sciences (issues relating to the relationship between medicine and biology)
  2. An essay chosen by the candidate from the following options: anatomy; biochemistry; physiology

Oral Test

A discussion on all subjects included in the written tests, solely for study programmes completed as part of the outgoing Degree Course, and an interview intended to assess a candidate’s motivation/disposition for the School’s programmes, their aptitude for their chosen subject area and for campus life.


Winners

Those who successfully pass the competition to enter at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies will enroll to University of Pisa where they will attend the courses required by their choosen degree programme. At the same time they will attend courses given at the School in a parallel and complementary path of higher education.

Honour Students will stay in the residential facilities provided by the School with a free use of the canteen service. The School's colleges are organized according to the university campus model.
