Bio

Andrea Mariani, (gender: male, date of birth: 28/04/1993) received his B.Sc. degree with Hons. and M.Sc. degree with Hons. in Biomedical Engineering in Politecnico di Milano in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He also achieved the Alta Scuola Politecnica diploma with Hons. in 2018. He attended a visiting period at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland), specifically working in the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics. He spent a trainship period in the Neuroengineering and Medical Robotics lab. He is currently a PhD student in Biorobotics at SSSA. His research focuses on simulation-based augmented training for robot assisted surgery and high intensity focused ultrasound therapeutic technologies. He worked as visiting research scientist at Univeristy College of London (UCL). He has been involved in international projects, including two Intuitive Technology Research Grants, FUTURA2020, KUKA Innovation Awards 2020, AfCam.

Research

Andrea's research focuses on simulation-based training for robot assisted surgery and high intensity ultrasound therapeutic technologies. Regarding the former, he is working on artificial intelligence mentoring for skill learning in robotic surgery, autonomous camera navigation techniques, sensorized technologies for training and haptic guidance. As far as it concerns high intensity focused ultrasound, his reasearch deals with the integration of robotics and focused ultrasound towards a novel non-invasive therapeutic solution.

He has been involved in international projects, including a KUKA Innovation Award 2020 (final winner), Intuitive Technology Research GrantFUTURA2020AfCam. He has been awarded multiple pitch and presentation awards, and the Best Innovation and Best Application awards for the project HIFUSK (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Surgery based on KUKA robot).
