Pisa hosted the first International Congress of the EASD Early Career Academy, a global event that places the Tuscan city at the centre of research and innovation in diabetology. The initiative, organised in collaboration between the University of Pisa and the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, represents a unique platform for training, discussion and growth for future leaders in diabetes research and care.

The congress was attended by 60 young researchers and clinicians from around the world, selected through rigorous criteria to ensure scientific excellence and international representation. They were guided by a panel of 44 internationally renowned speakers, representing the most advanced expertise in the field of diabetes and cardiometabolic health.

The event was structured around three key objectives:

  1. To preview scientific results and innovative research methods in the field of diabetes.
  2. To discuss problems and unmet needs in diabetes management, with a focus on emerging clinical and social challenges.
  3. To promote innovation and international and interdisciplinary collaboration to shape the future of diabetes care and research, fostering synergies between academia, clinical practice and industry.

The conference is made possible thanks to the support of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the initiative of Prof. Domenico Tricò, former student of the Sant'Anna School, professor at the University of Pisa and active member of the EASD Early Career Academy, who coordinated the scientific and logistical organisation of the event. The contribution of Prof. Michele Emdin and Dr Paola Tognini on behalf of the Sant'Anna School was also fundamental, as their experience and vision made it possible to integrate metabolic and cardiovascular issues into a multidisciplinary and translational perspective.

The Pisa diabetes community continues to be a centre of excellence in both academia and healthcare. Among the leading figures are Prof. Stefano Del Prato and Prof. Ele Ferrannini, internationally recognised for their studies on the pathophysiology and innovative therapies of type 2 diabetes, former presidents of the EASD and global leaders in diabetes research and training.

The EASD Early Career Academy conference in Pisa is not only a scientific event, but also an opportunity for growth and discussion that strengthens the role of the city and its academic institutions as a driving force for innovation and international excellence in the global fight against diabetes.
