Emilio Paolini, assistant professor at the TeCIP (Telecommunications, Informatics and Photonics) Institute of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, has received the GTTI PhD Award for his doctoral thesis "AI in NextG Networks: From Neuromorphic Photonic Hardware to System-Level Optimisation", discussed in the 2024/2025 academic year under the supervision of Professors Luca Valcarenghi (Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies) and Nicola Andriolli (University of Pisa) and Dr Luca Maggiani (Sma-RTy Italia).
The award was presented at the annual meeting of the Telecommunications and Information Technology Group Association, which is one of the initiatives promoted by GTTI at national level to spread culture and promote research and training in the field of telecommunications and telematics, with the aim of improving the national skills base and encouraging interaction between academia and industry.

Paolini's research addresses the use of multi-layer artificial intelligence techniques for next-generation networks, with a particular focus on photonic neuromorphic networks, noise-resilient algorithms and distributed optimisation in wireless systems. With numerous publications in leading international journals and conferences and results of immediate industrial applicability, the work represents a significant contribution to strengthening Italian research and the transition to future 5G and 6G networks.

The Telecommunications and Information Technology Group Association (GTTI), which awarded the prize, is made up of professors and researchers working in the telecommunications sector and, more generally, in the field of ICT - Information and Communication Technology - at Italian universities and research institutions, and promotes annual meetings to provide opportunities for discussion on the state of the sector, during which it awards young scholars with the aim of promoting merit and stimulating the growth of the national scientific community.
