Lisa Alibrandi, PhD student in Translational Medicine at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, selected by the American Heart Association to present her research data at the Basic Cardiovascular Science Scientific Session 2025

An important milestone for a PhD student at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. Lisa Alibrandi, a third-year veterinary doctor in the PhD program in Translational Medicine, has been selected to present part of her research data at the competitive Basic Cardiovascular Science Scientific Session 2025, organized by the prestigious American Heart Association (AHA).
The scientific event took place in Baltimore from July 23 to 26, 2025, and was an opportunity to discuss and promote the development of new therapies in the field of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Alibrandi presented part of the research project she is conducting under the supervision of Prof. Vincenzo Lionetti at the BioMedLab of the Interdisciplinary Health Science Research Center and the Experimental Biomedicine Center of the Research Area of the CNR in Pisa. The research project focuses on the development of a revolutionary approach to cardioprotection, with possible applications also for protecting the hearts of patients undergoing chemotherapy. The innovative strategy is based on the transplantation of extracellular vesicles enriched in mitochondria, a promising frontier in cardiovascular regenerative medicine. The data selected by the American Heart Association concern the efficacy of the treatment in a cell model of cardiomyocytes and help to clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying the protective effect observed in vivo. The preclinical phase of the study, which also involved collaboration with the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine at the University of Pisa and the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the CNR in Pisa, is now nearing completion.
Dr. Alibrandi's research is part of the PRIN 2022 PNRR – EXTREMEHEART project, funded by the Ministry of University and Research and conducted in collaboration with the University of Udine.
