The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies participated with a delegation from the Institutional Communication Unit and the Ecosystems and Public Engagement Unit in the 2024 annual APEnet network event, held in Trieste on November 14-15.

The event provided a valuable platform for dialogue among key players in public engagement and research in Italy, bringing together universities, research institutions, and sector professionals to engage in constructive discussions about innovative strategies and tools for involving society in knowledge and innovation.

APEnet, the “Italian Network of Universities and Research Institutions for Public Engagement” Association, organizes this event annually, featuring a members’ assembly followed by talks and presentations by experts in the field. The goal is to strengthen the bond between the research community and the public, emphasizing the role of universities as agents of change and progress at both local and national levels. The conference concluded with the presentation of case studies showcasing best practices and the latest developments in the sector.

Public Engagement as a Tool for Research and Social Participation

The APEnet annual conference served as a pivotal moment to explore and share strategies through which universities can expand their social impact, addressing contemporary challenges and raising public awareness of scientific, technological, and environmental issues.

Over the two days, discussions focused on building communities inspired by the principles of the Faro Convention and recognizing public engagement in career advancement. Updates on the working groups, in which Sant’Anna School actively participates, were also presented, alongside a forward-looking perspective on the 2025 objectives.

The event, chaired by Professor Pier Andrea Serra, a member of the APEnet Board of Directors and professor at the University of Sassari, witnessed strong participation both in person and online, with representatives from 57 universities and research institutions.
