On October 16 and 17, 2025, the second edition of the “Drone International Symposium-The Impact of Drone Technology on Society: benefits and challenges”, was held in Florence at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, organized by the Nello Carrara Institute of Applied Physics of CNR Florence, the Scuola spin-off company ABzero, the Universidad de Vigo, under the patronage of the Municipality of Florence and Civil Protection. The event saw the participation of the Universities of Genoa and Lecce, the Polytechnic of Turin, as well as researchers, start-ups, and companies, who discuss the future technological development of drones in agricultural, medical, geological, and architectural fields.

The international event brought together European institutions, companies and experts to explore and share experiences on the benefits and challenges related to the integration of drone technology and artificial intelligence in sectors such as security, health and advanced logistics. Representing the Scuola, Eng. Massimo Satler, from the Institute of Mechanical Intelligence, presented a paper titled “Autonomous Drone Operations in GNSS-Denied Environments: Applications in Inspection, Cooperation, and 3D Mapping”.

The Scuola spin-off company ABzero presented its intelligent drones designed to operate in the medical and healthcare field, with an innovative aerial transport system for biomedical products such as blood, tissues, biological samples, organs and medicines. The company demonstrated how this technology can make the transport of critical materials in the healthcare sector more efficient and safer.
