Bio
Riccardo Funari received his M.S. degree in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology in 2011 and his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 2015 from the University of Naples “Federico II” (Italy). He subsequently spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher between the University of Naples “Federico II” and the Jülich Forschungszentrum (Germany). From 2017 to 2021, he conducted postdoctoral research in the Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (Japan).
In 2021, he returned to Italy as an Assistant Professor at the University of Bari “Aldo Moro.” In 2024, he joined the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa as an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Mechanical Intelligence, working within the Photonic Sensing Integrated Systems research group.
He has authored 30 scientific publications (h-index 17) and holds two patents. His research focuses on biosensing and biotechnology for improving medical diagnostics, detecting harmful contaminants such as pesticides, toxins, and heavy metals, and monitoring food safety in real-world samples.
