Riccardo Luporini

Riccardo Luporini is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in International Law at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. He is currently working on the EUMA project (“Creating a EUropean Higher Education Network for MAster’s Programmes in Disaster Risk Management”). The project has been funded by the Union Civil Protection Mechanism and aims to develop an innovative, high-level, and tailor-made postgraduate Master’s programme on disaster risk and crisis management. He is also part of the research team of the PRIN project HELP (“Health Emergencies and Legal Preparedness”), the Jean Monnet Chair EIHRSCaD “European and International Human Rights Standards in Conflicts and Disasters”, and AfricaConnect. He is a member of the editorial committee of The Italian Review of International and Comparative Law.

At the Scuola, Riccardo previously worked on the PRO3 project  F-LAWS “Preventing and Managing Flood Events: A Technical-Legal Analysis of the Implementation of Legislation Against Hydro-Geological Instability in Italy” and served as course tutor and key teaching staff member of the Advanced Training Course EIHRSDS ("European and International Human Rights Standards in Disaster Settings"), offered as part of a Jean Monnet Module co-funded by the European Union.

In his research, Riccardo is currently focusing on human rights-based climate change litigation, and to this end, he is also a national rapporteur for Italy at the Global Climate Litigation database of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law (Columbia University in the City of New York).

Riccardo obtained his PhD from the Scuola with a research project dealing with climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction from a human rights perspective. 

Previously, Riccardo served as Assistant to the Special Rapporteur on the topic "Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters" at the 68th session of the International Law Commission of the United Nations. He worked as a Blue Book Trainee at DG ECHO, European Commission, where he dealt with the implementation of the rescEU initiative. He was a Visiting PhD Fellow at the Faculty of Law and the Copenhagen Center for Disaster Research (COPE), University of Copenhagen.
