SDG 7: Affordable and Clean energy
Sustainable Development Goal number 7 (SDG 7) aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. This goal is fundamental for economic and social development and for combating climate change.
Access to energy is an indispensable condition for human development. Yet, today, around 800 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity, and 2.8 billion people still rely on polluting fossil fuels for cooking and heating.
SDG 7 includes several specific targets, including:
- By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy services.
- Increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix substantially by 2030.
- Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.
- Enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research, development and technology, including renewable energy technologies, especially in developing countries and small island developing states.
Achieving SDG 7 will require massive investment in renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies. It is also necessary to strengthen policy and regulatory frameworks to promote sustainable energy development.
Everyone can contribute to achieving SDG 7 by adopting sustainable energy practices, using energy-efficient appliances, and supporting organizations working to bring clean energy to communities around the world.
