OPEN CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP IN NEW GENERATION ROBOTS AT THE TECIP INSTITUTE OF SCUOLA SUPERIORE SANT'ANNA

A new position of Associate Professor with tenure at the interface among Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and  Material Science is going to be opened at the Institute of Communication, Information and Perception Technologies (The TeCIP Institute) of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, within a Strategic Initiative aimed at building a world-class “Department in Robotics and Intelligent Machines”, with 15 M€ investments from the Ministry of Education and Research.

The position will be covered by means of a public competitive examination according to the Italian law. Before the formal opening of the position, The TeCIP Institute is calling for expression of interest from potential candidates interested in applying to it.

In an attempt to strengthening its international position in the field of New Generation Robots, Artificial Intelligence and Material Science are considered key technologies to enhance the robots cognitive functions and their moto-sensorial skills. The TeCIP Institute is therefore looking for experts in these areas that are expected to greatly accelerate the development of robotic technologies. Depending on the level and qualification of the received expressions of interest, the position will be open in the most appropriate academic sector in the area of industrial and information engineering, accordingly with the Italian regulation for academic employment.

PROFILE

We are looking for experts either in artificial intelligence or material science for robotics interested in studying the development of learning and cognitive skills and implementing advanced communication, sensing and actuation functions to improve the robots interactions with the humans and with their surrounding environment.

Applicants are expected to have a prominent recognition in one or more of the following areas:

1.         Intelligent Machine Design for Robotics

2.         Humanoid Robotics and Human Robot Cooperation

3.         New Materials and Sensing/Actuation Technologies for Robotics

4.         Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Robotics 

5.         New Generation Sensors including Photonic Sensing and Integrated Photonics for Robotics

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate science or engineering field. The successful applicant will be required to teach, advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, develop an independent, externally funded research program, participate in all aspects of the Institute activities. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates with recent and relevant hands-on experience with applied research and technology development in artificial  intelligence and information technologies, material science and sensing, with academic leadership experience. Applicants should consult the Institute website to review our academic and research programs.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching statement, and copies of no more than five publications. They should also include the names of four individuals to submit letters of recommendation on their behalf. This information must be submitted by email to tecip@santannapisa.it  by June 2, 2019 when review of applications will begin.

After the closure of the present call for expression of interest, the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna will open the official call for the post, as required by the Italian regulation for academic employment. The successful applicant must possess the Italian national scientific habilitation (ASN) in relevant academic sectors in the Area 09 - Industrial and information engineering, or have hold an Associate Professor position for at least three years in a foreign country, as required by the Italian law. It is expected to fill the position by Fall/Winter 2019.
