Bio

Alessandro Mario Amoroso is a Postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in international law at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa. His work focuses on international law and armed conflict, in particular international humanitarian law, human rights law, international criminal law, and the law of the use of force.

He has completed his PhD at the Scuola Sant'Anna, focusing on State military assistance to non-State armed groups. Previously, he worked as a Legal Adviser at the International Committee of the Red Cross and as a Programme Officer in Security and Law at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

Recently, he was a Visiting fellow at the University of Cambridge, Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. He co-edited a special journal issue on the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan. He coordinated a team of students from Scuola Sant’Anna participating in the Italian Navy’s military exercise “Mare Aperto”.

In 2022, he received the SIDI Prize for the best journal article on international law by the Italian Society of International and EU Law.

He holds a PhD cum laude in Human Rights and Global Politics from the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, an LLM cum laude in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy (Graduate Institute and University of Geneva) and a Laurea Magistrale in Giurisprudenza summa cum laude from the University of Naples Federico II.

He speaks Italian, English, French and Spanish, and he is learning Arabic.

Research

His research centres on the study of international law and armed conflict, with a focus on international humanitarian law, human rights law, international criminal law, and the law of the use of force in international relations. He has focused so far on military assistance, partnered military operations, non-State armed groups, counterterrorism, international criminal justice, and national implementation of international law.

Currently, he is involved in a research project on "The international protection of human dignity through criminal law".
